The VIKING MUSEUM HAITHABU, opened in 1985, is one of the most important archaeological museums in Germany with up to 180,000 visitors a year and is the world's largest and most important themed museum on the Viking Age. Within sight of the historic site of Hedeby, a modern exhibition covering over 1,000 m² presents the rich and spectacular archaeological finds from over 100 years of research in Hedeby and provides information about the Viking Age and life in the early medieval trading centre of Hedeby 1,000 years ago. An open-air museum with seven reconstructed Viking houses and a landing stage with several boats in the middle of the historic site brings the Viking Age to life with all senses and offers plenty of space for experiencing history and re-enactment. During the season from Easter to October, there is an extensive programme of events with guided tours, children's activities, craft workshops, re-enactment markets and lectures in the Viking houses in Hedeby’s open-air grounds.
