The Association for Living History, Farm and Agricultural Museums (ALHFAM) is an international organization for people involved in living historical farms, agricultural museums, and other living history sites. Founded in 1970, ALHFAM works to preserve and share the practical knowledge and skills that were part of past eras.

The association's members include institutional staff, volunteers, reenactors, and vendors who "bring history to life" at museums and historical sites across the United States, Canada, and other countries.

Key functions and resources

  • Networking and education: ALHFAM organizes annual and regional conferences, workshops, and other specialized instructional programs. The annual meeting includes sessions and workshops covering topics relevant to historical agriculture and interpretation.

  • Preservation of skills: The organization is dedicated to documenting and preserving historical skills, trades, and traditions. It maintains the ALHFAM Skills & Knowledge Base (A.S.K.), a searchable database of published documents and resources for members.

  • Publications: ALHFAM produces a quarterly online publication called the ALHFAM Bulletin, available to members.

  • Advocacy and partnerships: ALHFAM maintains and expands relationships with other historical and interpretive organizations. It values collaboration and the sharing of knowledge with partner organizations, such as EXARC, a network for archaeological open-air museums.

  • Regional networks: For wider member participation, ALHFAM is organized into nine regions across North America, which coordinate local meetings and newsletters.
