I am the Chief Instructor at Canterbury Medieval Combat and a published historian and martial artist with more than 25 years’ experience. I specialize in Japanese Iaijutsu and Kenjutsu, and over the last ten years have concentrated on European medieval combat, especially the German tradition. My research spans combat systems from the Bronze Age to the late medieval period and examines how weapons were designed and used — why they were made the way they were, and how form, material, and context shaped fighting techniques. I have worked with schools, gaming companies, historical sites and museums, and my teaching — from Bartitsu and WWI trench-fighting to judicial and military systems — always combines historical context with practical weapon-handling.
