I am a Dutch national but live in Italy since 1983 and since 1994 in Rome. I have always been attracted to history and archaeology in general but concentrate on Roman history. Since 2006, I have participated as an active member in a group dedicated to reenacting the Roman Republic era. My primary focus is on Roman technological advancements, whether originally developed by the Romans or adopted and enhanced from other cultures.
During one of my visits to the Archeon Park in the Netherlands park, Archaeologist Tom Hazenberg and myself, had the idea to create a park similar to Archeon near Rome, Italy. Rome as location for the Limes Park was an obvious choice as center of the former empire combined with a lack of interpretational reconstructions and the actuality of well-preserved original remains. After completing our project plan and financial memorandum, we are now seeking funding to launch Rome Limes Park.
The central theme of the Rome Limes Park will be “from Rome to Limes, from Limes to Rome.” This concept highlights the historical significance and the enduring influence of the Roman Limes, the boundary of the Roman Empire, as it extended from Rome outward and, in turn, connected distant regions back to the imperial center.
Within the planned museum, visitors will find detailed exhibits and presentations that explain and shed light on the impact of the Roman Limes across 18 modern countries. Each nation touched by the Limes will be explored, offering insights into how Roman history, culture, and technology shaped these regions. The museum aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the legacy and reach of the Roman Empire, emphasizing the interconnectedness of its territories and the lasting imprint of its boundaries.
