Dr. Tavia La Follette is a transdisciplinary artist, curator, and director. She is a storyteller working in spaces where the fields-of-practice are porous, to build new knowledge for our ever-evolving world.
La Follette is especially interested in the connection between Devised Performance and Experimental Archaeology. Devising Theatre is a collaborative process, that does not work from a script—but rather work from information to build a narrative/meaning.
As we learn that temples and ritual arrived before humans became sedentary, La Follette believes the cross-fertilization of the two practices can lead to deciphering and interpretation of meaning. Performance, art, and puppetry have taught her the power of symbols. Symbols help us to say what we cannot say with words, they tap into our emotions.
Emotions, like religious or spiritual practices, help us recognize our values. Values, like cultures, contradict. This contradiction, this paradox, is what interests La Follette about the human condition. Based out of Baltimore, with political cartoonist, Gary Huck, their most impressive experimental work are their twins, Max and Calder.
