Nordic Winter Camp 2026 About to Start
A group of enthusiastic prehistory practitioners and heritage interpreters is about to leave for the Nordic Winter Camp, an immersive programme dedicated to experiencing prehistoric winter living in the remote boreal landscape of southern Lapland.
During the ten-day programme, participants will establish a winter base camp in a traditional Sami earth lodge. Living together as a small “clan”, they will follow a strictly prehistoric framework, relying solely on authentic tools, materials, and methods.
The experience involves wearing prehistoric clothing, preparing and consuming unprocessed foods free from grains, sugar, alcohol, and coffee, and living without modern sanitary facilities. Activities include practising ancient crafts, processing reindeer meat, ice fishing, and sharing knowledge within the group.
Preparations are well underway. Participants are travelling from Germany, France, Denmark, Finland, and the Netherlands, forming a dedicated group of seven, ready to take on the physical and mental challenges of mid-winter conditions.
The Winter Camp has been organised by EXARC member Markus Klek, Paläotechnik (Germany). The entire EXARC community wishes the team every success with this expedition and looks forward to hearing about the new knowledge and experiences that will be gained along the way.
