JOIN OUR WORKING GROUPS -

The EXARC Archaeological Science Working Group brings together researchers and practitioners interested in the scientific approaches that support experimental archaeology and heritage interpretation. The group provides a platform for collaboration between archaeologists, specialists, museum professionals, craftspeople, and educators working across a wide range of analytical and experimental methods.

Members explore subjects such as material analysis, residue studies, archaeobotany, archaeozoology, dating methods, environmental archaeology, metallurgy, ceramics, and the replication of ancient technologies. Experimental approaches help test archaeological interpretations and provide new insights into how materials, objects, and technologies were produced and used in the past.

The Working Group encourages dialogue between laboratory-based research and practical experimentation, recognising that scientific analysis and hands-on reconstruction are most effective when combined. Through workshops, publications, collaborative projects, and shared case studies, members contribute to a broader understanding of archaeological science within experimental archaeology and open-air museums.

The group welcomes both specialists and non-specialists with an interest in scientific approaches to understanding the past.
