The EXARC Building Practices Working Group focuses on the study, reconstruction, and interpretation of historical buildings and built environments. Bringing together archaeologists, architects, craftspeople, museum professionals, and heritage specialists, the group explores how structures from the past were designed, constructed, maintained, and experienced.

Members work with a wide range of materials and traditions, including timber, earth, stone, thatch, and mixed construction techniques from different cultures and periods. Experimental reconstruction allows researchers to test archaeological hypotheses, understand construction processes, and investigate the practical challenges of building technologies and settlement life.

The Working Group supports the exchange of knowledge on reconstruction methodologies, authenticity, sustainability, visitor engagement, and long-term maintenance of reconstructed sites. Discussions also address the role of reconstructed buildings in education, interpretation, and public archaeology.

Through collaboration and practical experimentation, the group contributes to a deeper understanding of historical architecture and the people who created and inhabited these spaces.
