The EXARC Roman Experimental Archaeology Working Group brings together researchers, museum professionals, craftspeople, reenactors, and enthusiasts interested in the experimental study of the Roman period. The group explores Roman technologies, crafts, military life, domestic activities, agriculture, trade, and material culture through practical experimentation and reconstruction.
Members investigate a wide range of topics, including Roman engineering, construction, pottery, metallurgy, textiles, cooking, transport, military equipment, and living history interpretation. By recreating ancient techniques and testing archaeological evidence in practice, the group seeks to better understand the skills, resources, and knowledge required in the Roman world.
The Working Group encourages collaboration between academic research and practical experience, recognising the value of experimentation in interpreting archaeological evidence and communicating Roman history to wider audiences. Members share methods, results, and experiences through workshops, events, publications, and collaborative projects.
The group welcomes participants from all backgrounds who are interested in exploring Roman life through experimental archaeology and hands-on practice.
