TEXTILES
Exploring ancient textiles through experimental archaeology, traditional craft practice, and interdisciplinary research.
The EXARC Textiles Working Group connects researchers, makers, museum professionals, and heritage practitioners interested in historical textile production and archaeological reconstruction. Together, we investigate the skills, materials, and technologies behind textile traditions from the past.

Textiles are among the most revealing, yet most fragile, forms of archaeological evidence. From fibres, yarns, and dyes to looms, tools, and clothing traditions, textile studies offer unique insights into technology, trade, identity, economy, and daily life across cultures and time periods. The EXARC Textiles Working Group brings together researchers, craftspeople, museum professionals, educators, and experimental archaeologists who share an interest in the reconstruction, study, and interpretation of ancient and historical textiles.
The Working Group provides an international platform for collaboration and exchange. Members explore all aspects of textile production and use, including spinning, weaving, dyeing, sewing, nalbinding, tablet weaving, fibre preparation, and the replication of archaeological textile finds. Through experimental archaeology and hands-on practice, we aim to better understand the materials, techniques, labour, and knowledge behind textile traditions of the past.
The group encourages interdisciplinary dialogue between academic research and practical experience. By combining archaeological evidence with experimental work and traditional craft knowledge, members contribute to a deeper understanding of textile technologies and their cultural significance. The Working Group also supports the sharing of methods, results, and resources through workshops, online meetings, publications, demonstrations, and collaborative projects.
We welcome participation from anyone interested in archaeological textiles and traditional fibre crafts, whether professionally or personally. The group is open to experienced specialists, students, museum interpreters, reenactors, artisans, and newcomers eager to learn more about textile heritage and experimental practice.
The EXARC Textiles Working Group reflects EXARC’s wider mission to connect people through experimental archaeology, ancient technologies, and heritage interpretation. Together, we explore how working with textiles can help us better understand the lives, skills, and creativity of people in the past.
