KORYVANTES: Exploring the Past through Experimental Archaeology

Blog by KORYVANTES

The Association of Historical Studies "KORYVANTES" is a non-profit cultural organization based in Athens, Greece, officially recognized by the Greek Peace Court and registered in the National Registry of Cultural Organizations under the Ministry of Culture of Greece.

Founded in 2008 by researchers, archaeologists, and history enthusiasts who were dissatisfied with the level of historical reconstructions available at the time, KORYVANTES set out to adopt a rigorous framework rooted in experimental archaeological methodology. Over 18 years of continuous activity, the Association has grown into a leading international organization in the field of Greek military heritage research, experimental archaeology, and living history.

The team includes archaeologists, warfare specialists, martial arts experts, Byzantine studies analysts, and Bronze Age researchers - all united by a passion for bringing ancient history to life through science and hands-on practice.

We are currently engaged in three main projects: the reconstruction of arrowheads from the Classical and Hellenistic periods, covering the 5th to 10th centuries BC, with the aim of conducting experimental archaeology tests on their ballistic performance and durability; a Byzantine reenactment project focused on historical reconstruction, interpretation, and public presentation of material culture and military life; and our participation in an upcoming international documentary production for a major global platform, through which we will contribute our expertise in ancient warfare, experimental archaeology, and historical reconstruction.

Over the years, KORYVANTES has collaborated with a wide range of prestigious international institutions, including: BBC, ITV, Channel 5, History Channel, CANAL+, Movistar+ (documentary productions), Ubisoft (video game historical consulting), University of Belgrade, University of Warsaw, British Archaeological Reports (BAR) / Archaeopress, Musée Gallo-Romain de Saint-Romain-en-Gal (France), The Greek Ministry of Culture, and Ethnosport, among many others.

The Association has also participated in international events such as the Biskupin Archaeological Festival (Poland), international historical archery championships (South Korea, China, UK, Hungary, Turkey), and has engaged with organizations from Turkey, Poland, Korea, and beyond. KORYVANTES is an institutional member of EXARC (since 2025) and holds memberships in multiple international federations.
