ExArIS 2026: Experimental Archaeology Field School

The ExArIS team is pleased to announce that applications are now open for the 2026 edition of its intensive training and applied research program. The field school will take place in the exceptional cultural landscape of Băiceni (Cucuteni commune), offering participants a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between theory and practice within a rigorous scientific framework.

Objectives and Scientific Framework

The 2026 edition is exclusively dedicated to ceramic technology, structured around the concept of chaîne opératoire. Participants will investigate the limits and potential of experimental archaeology as a method for testing and verifying scientific hypotheses, working through all stages of prehistoric ceramic production.

Key areas include:

  • Raw Material Analysis: Identification, extraction, and selection of local clay sources and tempers.

  • Technological Processes: Paste preparation and experimentation with shaping, finishing, and decoration techniques specific to the Eneolithic period.

  • Pyrotechnology: Construction and operation of an experimental kiln.

  • Use and Functionality: Testing vessel performance through experimental food preparation and use-wear analysis.

This initiative is organised as part of Maria-Cristina Ciobanu’s doctoral research and is integrated into the research project PN-IV-P1-PCE-2023-0040: “Prehistoric Centers of Ceramic Production and Distribution? An Integrated Strategy for Studying an Ancient Craft – POTCRAFT” (Project Director: Senior Researcher II Dr. Felix-Adrian Tencariu).

Who Should Apply?

The program is designed for undergraduate, master’s, and PhD students seeking to develop methodological and analytical skills, as well as practical expertise in ceramic technology. Particular emphasis will be placed on detailed process documentation, variable control, and critical evaluation of experimental results.

Registration

Applications are open until 15 May 2026.
